
Willem Buijink is emeritus Professor of Business Economics at Tilburg University’s School of Economics and Management. He taught financial and management accounting and conducted research in financial accounting, tax accounting, auditing, and accounting history. His work has appeared in leading journals such as Contemporary Accounting Research, the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, and the European Accounting Review.Professor Buijink previously served as Vice Dean of Education and Research at TiSEM and chaired the Department of Accountancy. He co-founded the MARC research institute and organized several EU-funded programs for training young accounting researchers. He also held academic positions at Maastricht University and the University of Antwerp and currently serves as part-time Professor of Accounting at the Dutch Open University. His research interests include the economics of financial accounting, regulation, and historical development of accounting.
In een scherpzinnig interview pleit emeritus hoogleraar Willem Buijink voor meer ruimte voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek binnen de accountancysector. Volgens Buijink wordt het debat te vaak gedomineerd door retoriek in plaats van feiten. Hij roept op tot betere benutting van academisch onderzoek door beleidsmakers en toezichthouders.
Buijink wijst op de risico’s van marktconcentratie bij de Big Four en benadrukt het belang van samenwerking tussen wetenschap en praktijk. Zijn boodschap is helder: “Laten we stoppen met overreguleren op basis van incidenten en beginnen met luisteren naar wat onderzoek ons écht vertelt.”
