Flashback Masterclass prof. dr. Jere Francis
Recently prof. dr. Jere Francis “... gave a beautiful interactive class on how institutions like SEC or AFM, audit firm type, individual offices and partners affect audit quality. All three do affect audit quality in their own way. For instance, stronger enforcement does lead to better quality Jere said based in his work. Not the whole class accepted this observation so we had a very instructive discussion.”
This masterclass examined what we have learned about the drivers of audit quality from over 40 years of archival audit research.
The masterclass consisted of four parts. Part 1 was about defining audit quality: is it binary or a spectrum (a continuum from low to high quality)? Part 2 was about the question why institutions are important. Part 3 was about how might we better study the role of institutions. And Part 4 was about archival research on audit firms and offices concerning audit quality, firms and offices, with a focus on the Netherlands.
Jere used fragments from the video of his inaugural lecture at Maastricht University to get the discussion going. The collation of the fragments from his inaugural lecture can be found here:

📅 Note that in 2024, there will be a follow-up Masterclass, that goes even “smaller” in focus and examines audit teams. What are the drivers of quality in audit teams that determine the effectiveness of audit teams?
